On August 7th 1974 the French tightrope performer Philippe Petit strung cable...

and performed a 45-minute walk between the towers' tops, a distance of 40 meters.

Beautiful in their own way.

From the top.

On 9/11/2001 both towers were destroyed in cowardly acts of terrorist violence.

Mohammed Atta and Abdulaziz Alomari checking through security in BostonThe route of American Airlines flight 11 from Boston

While flight 11 was taking off, little did we know that other ill-intentioned men were boarding planes elsewhre.

Hijacker Mohamed Atta on Flight 11 calls hijacker Marwan Alshehhi in Flight 175 as both planes sit on the runway. They confirm the plot is on. ["Just before 8:00," Time, 8/4/02] Do investigators know what was said in this call or are they just guessing, and if they do, what does that say about their data collection abilities?

Tower 1 hit by flight 11.After the first plane hit.

We found out later that other hijackers had boarded flight 175 in Portland Maine.
American Airlines flight 175's route from Portland

and then the more horrible, unthinkable thing happened.............

Another plane hits the second towerFrom another angle

Notice the upturned wingtips... the mark of a professional keeping the plane level in a banking turn

And it explodes.

The buildings burn
and burn.

Will the 260 firefighters going be able to get them all out?

It is not to be.

Are occupants all
getting out?

The tower hit by the second plane is not meant to stand:

Manhattan Before

Manhattan After

A cloud of dust fell on Manhattan, causing untold health problems, still not fully known.

United Airlines Flight 93 also had been hijacked for another evil mission.

Flight 93 is delayed for 41 minutes on the runway in Newark, finally taking off at 8:42. The Boston Globe credits this delay as a major reason why this was the only one of the four flights not to succeed in its mission.

Tom Burnett

Tom Burnett calls his wife Deena and says, "I'm on United Flight 93 from Newark to San Francisco. The plane has been hijacked. We are in the air. They've already knifed a guy. There is a bomb on board. Call the FBI." Deena connects to emergency 911. [9:27] She scribbled down what Tom told her and noted the time.

Flight 93 crashed near Pittsburgh after passengers staged a revolt..

The clean-up begins in New York city and Washington DC
